About
My name is Sinikka, which in Finnish means blue or blue bird. Maybe it was always a quiet sign of where life would lead me.
I was born in a small town in Germany and have been living in Lisbon for the past seven years. For over six years I have been rehabilitating pigeons, doves, and other animals. I never imagined birds would become such a central part of my life. I have been vegetarian for 22 years and vegan for the past 10, caring deeply for all animals, but my connection with birds began later.
It started with a crow I raised and eventually released back into the wild. The crow found a mate and I thought my short chapter with birds had ended. But then came Juni, my very first pigeon.
Juni, named after the month June (Juni in German, pronounced you-nee), was a tiny squeaker with a broken wing. She needed surgery and I did not know much about pigeons back then. I kept her in a box beside me while I worked at my desk, but she kept jumping up, banging her head against the sides. I did not know what to do until I finally let her out. She hopped straight onto my arm and settled there. All she wanted was to be with me.
That small moment changed everything. It opened my eyes and heart to a kind of connection I had never experienced before, with an animal almost invisible to humans, even to me back then. Since then, my world has never been the same.
To raise awareness for pigeons and to cover food and rescue expenses, I began sharing my pigeon art. My hope is not only to sustain my own rescue efforts but eventually to support other small rescues in Lisbon as well. As an e-commerce entrepreneur, I have always self-financed everything and supported others whenever possible. In mid 2025 I became very sick and struggled to keep up with everything. That was when I decided to share my artwork without expecting much.
The response has been overwhelming. The feedback, love, and support from people all over the world has been mind-blowing, and I could not be more grateful. That was when I knew I had to continue, not only for the pigeons but also because this art carries a purpose beyond myself.
If my life has a purpose, let it be this: to make people see these birds with new eyes, to help them love what they once ignored, and to treat every animal with the respect and compassion they deserve.
